Blog #1, We're Making a Splash Y'all
Hey y'all! My name's Sameera Jaffery, but I tell everyone to
call me Sami. I've played soccer since I was four years old, and I started the
cello in fourth grade and continued it all the way until I graduated high
school. I have two dogs and two cats at home. Their names are Zeus, Zola,
Pickles, and Khaleesi. I also work at Spartanburg Humane Society, so I
actually have like 400 pets. But anyways, I guess I should say a little more
about my music taste. I really enjoy every genre of music; it just
depends on the mood I'm in. From country to old jazz, everything speaks to
me.
Lastly, some music I think y'all should know about is early jazz, pop, and blues. Specifically, my favorite black artists. Etta James, Ella Fitzgerald, Louis Armstrong, Sam Cooke, Otis Redding, The Temptations, Nat "King" Cole, Betty Carter, Ray Charles, The Shirelles, The Ronettes, Jackson 5, and others. I'm going to embed some of my favorite songs from a few of these artists below.
My go to music right now is more mellow music, like lo-fi or
acoustic indie. I use lo-fi for studying and doing homework, and acoustic
indie just speaks to me when I can't figure out what mood I'm in. Right now,
one of my go-to songs is rises the moon by Liana Flores. I'll make
sure to embed the video. I first heard the song on TikTok, and I really enjoy
her voice.
My next piece of music is personal to me. Something my dad would play a lot
when I was younger. My dad liked lots of things, he was from Pakistan, so he
also liked Pakistani and Indian bands. One of his favorite songs though, was
Junoon by Abhijeet Sawant. Every time I listen to it, I think of how he used
to sing it to me when I was a kid. None of it is in English, but I still
sing to it.
I'm going to be honest; I think I'm going to struggle
with this last prompt. I really love ALL music, so I'm going to put
something that I don't know much about that I'd like to learn more about. I
once saw a woman on TikTok play the Dan Tranh, which is a Vietnamese
zither. I thought the instrument was so interesting, and I'd love to know
more about where it is played, when it was created, and other
things!

That Liana Flores song is super soothing and she has a unique voice, perfect for studying. The second song you put has a nice melody and instrumentals, even if I can't understand it. The Dan Tranh sounds super cool and I would like to hear more of it. Lastly, I think the era of music you put at the end is one of, if not the best generation of music. They inspired so many other artists and their music stays timeless.
ReplyDeleteI really enjoyed listening to your music! I had never heard a few of the songs you mentioned, but I loved the variety you shared. I'm a big fan of some of the music you mentioned for the final prompt. I've always loved Nat King Cole and Etta James, especially the song A Sunday Kind of Love.
ReplyDeleteSami! If I'm being honest, I've never listened to Indie music before. I do, however; see your interest in it. For me, It would be nice music to listen to while doing homework. I think your blog was great. You really took the time and answered the prompt thoroughly!
ReplyDeleteI really enjoyed reading and listening to your music choices! I've never took the time to appreciate Indie music before, but I actually kind of liked it. Also I absolutely LOVE the song Be My Baby! I love music like that it makes me so happy.
ReplyDeleteI completely agree about the jazz and blues! That music is so timeless. I love "Be My Baby" and "A Sunday Kind of Love". My favorite type of songs are love songs and jazz and blues just captivate the genre in such a beautiful way. My favorite at the moment is "It Ain't Over 'Til It's Over" by Lenny Kravitz. It's such a feel good song.
