My Interests Beyond the Classroom Blog #3

Beyond the Classroom, what's interesting Sami? Hey y'all! Welcome back to blog number 3 this time.  One of the things we talked about that I already knew about was the cover up of the mass genocide of Native Americans and their culture with boarding schools. I knew about it before taking this class, but I want to know more than what I already knew and what I learned in class. I think it's important that the public education system, especially regarding southern legislation bills pertaining to education, stop trying to whitewash history. It is important for us to know about the mistakes we made as a society, so we hopefully do not repeat them. This was not just in the US though; this was widespread in Canada as well. Thousands of children were ripped from their families, abused, tortured, brainwashed, and killed. Many suffered abuse from the catholic priests and nuns, including sexual assault.  Another thing I want to learn more about is Sona Jobarteh's Gambia Academy. ...

Let's talk about music and religion.  ***PSA*** This blog is full of a lot of videos, so read/listen if you like Christian music or want to know more.  Growing up in the bible belt, I was raised Muslim, but my parents still allowed me to go to church with my friends every so often. This was where I was first exposed to worship music and Christian pop. At first, I never knew what any of the songs were about, or what the lyrics were; I merely had a basic knowledge of the bible and who Jesus, God, Mary, etc. were. As I continued going to church and YoungLife, I began to learn more about the culture around Christian music in the bible belt. My favorite part of church was always worship, I loved singing and the way it made me feel closer to God. But today, I'm not sure what religion I'd consider myself as. Right now, I believe I am agnostic or non-denominational. But what are some of the things I learned? Probably the first song I learned in worship was Tremble, by Mosaic MSC. I...

Hey y'all! My name's Sameera Jaffery, but I tell everyone to call me Sami. I've played soccer since I was four years old, and I started the cello in fourth grade and continued it all the way until I graduated high school. I have two dogs and two cats at home. Their names are Zeus, Zola, Pickles, and Khaleesi. I also work at Spartanburg Humane Society, so I actually have like 400 pets. But anyways, I guess I should say a little more about my music taste. I really enjoy every genre of music; it just depends on the mood I'm in. From country to old jazz, everything speaks to me.      My go to music right now is more mellow music, like lo-fi or acoustic indie. I use lo-fi for studying and doing homework, and acoustic indie just speaks to me when I can't figure out what mood I'm in. Right now, one of my go-to songs is rises the moon  by Liana Flores. I'll make sure to embed the video. I first heard the song on TikTok, and...
